Take a look at our 2017 Conference…

Keynote Speaker

We were delighted when we announced our 2017 keynote speaker would be the Head of Innovation of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circular Economy, Ken Webster.

Ken’s incredible knowledge of the Circular Economy and its possibilities for every organisation, turns usual thinking on its head.

Our delegates were completely inspired by Ken’s presentation and delighted that he took the time for one-to-one sessions with those who attended specifically to hear him talk.

The Southern Sustainability Partnership team studied Ken’s book ‘A Wealth of Flows Circular Economy’ at Bournemouth University in 2017.  We highly recommend this piece of work which launched in 2015.

Since 2010 Ken has worked with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and has a background in environmental issues and economics education.  His book relates the connections between systems thinking, economic and business opportunity and the potential for a circular economy.

Ken is also a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University, an Honorary Teaching Fellow at the School of Management at the University of Bradford.

The best event I have been to for a long, long-time.” Editor Recycling and Waste World Magazine

 Josh Fothergill, IEMA

We invited Josh Fothergill of IEMA to talk about his work with the new Circular Economy standard by the British Standards Institute BSI this year, ahead of its launch in May 2017.

Josh was able to share his experiences in helping develop the forthcoming standard BSI 8001, as well as how it could relate to those organisations operating as ISO14001 compliant EMS.

We were delighted to have Josh take part as a presenter, as well as his valuable input in the interactive sessions and end of day panel.

“Excellent mix of speakers. Well balanced and coordinated day and I really enjoyed meeting other delegates.”  Shyju Skariah, Textiles Services Association.

Philip Dudell, Sustainable Procurement

We were delighted to have Philip take part in the day.  During his career, Philip has provided support on public and private contracts valued in excess of £3 billion, trained hundreds of procurers and suppliers and developed tools and guidance used by clients.

Procurement is an important enabling mechanism to achieve an organisation’s intended outcomes, which is why we felt it was an important element for the 2017 Conference.

Quality presenters, good opportunities to network and explore partnership opportunities.” Susie Tomson, PCSG – Working with Landrover BAR and the Americas Cup

Jason Light, Eastleigh Borough Council

Jason Light is Environmental Lead at Eastleigh Borough Council.

Jason and his team at the local authority have undertaken many projects, including Solar PV, LED Lighting, Electric Vehicles, Bike to Work Scheme, Waste and Recycling Management to name a few.

Delegates were pleased to hear from a public sector presenter, and Jason’s presentation provoked a number of one-to-one sessions during the conference breaks.

“As someone new to the Circular Economy way of thinking, this was a great introduction with plenty of thought provoking content. We also met with another delegate that we have been able to help with our technology.” Matthew Vass TomTom

An absolute eye-opener.Alex MacArthur, Mayflower Theatre Southampton

Jonathan Lodge, City Farm Systems

City Farm Systems produce the most commercially viable and sustainable facilities for the growing of the most perishable and hardest to transport fresh produce. The way they do so make for a highly enlightening presentation, from which we have had great feedback from our delegates.

With current suppliers, noted Jonathan, it can take 500miles and 3 days to deliver bagged salads to British retailers. Worrying statistics say that leading retailers report 60% simply ends up wasted. With a City Farm Systems installation, retailers could give those 3 days to the consumer, resulting in enormous savings as a result of no transport, less packaging and lower costs and pollution.

Amazing examples of sustainability innovation, an inspiration that progress not only can but is being made.” Josh Fothergill, IEMA

Steve Mason, Pearce Compaction Systems

Steve Mason created our green supplier section of the day, demonstrating to delegates what can be achieved through on-site effective waste management.

Compactors at Pearce at designed and built at their recently expanded premises in Verwood – Dorset. Steve also brought along one of the products in their kit for delegates to look over and understand just how much can be saved by managing waste.

Steve also demonstrated their solar powered compactor installed at Windsor Castle.

Really enjoyed Jonathan Lodge from City Farm Systems and we will further investigate BSI 8001. There is a lot of knowledge and things going on that are not generally known.”  Jeff Everett, Hadland Care Group

Tom Old, Clean Energy UK

Tom Old and Karl Walker have both spent time with Al Gore in the Philippines and also joined delegates at the 2015 Paris Climate talks.

An advocate of the green agenda, Tom shared an update in the energy world and what is being achieved with renewables. Many of our delegates were amazed at just how far the renewable energy sector has moved on.

Clean Energy UK provide commercial energy that is sourced only from renewable energy with savings over traditional sources which again surprised many of those who attended.

Very inspiring day, so much more to learn as I am new to the subject, but I have been armed with a good source of information and contacts. Great day and well organised.”  Sharon Woma, Care for the Elderly, University Hospital Bristol

 Winner of our 2017 Competition

Southampton based FreeGo Electric Bikes provided each delegate with an opportunity to win one of their UK manufactured electric bikes, with both a male and female version available on the day.  We are delighted to share that Alex MacArthur of the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton was this year’s winner.
